Statement on the II Muslim Magomaev International Vocalists Contest. Crocus City Hall, Moscow, October 2012

The II International Vocalists Contest will take place on 20-21 October 2012 on the Crocus City Hall stage.

The Contest is a competitive show for vocal singers capable to demonstrate their abilities, talent and mastery in performing both classic and popular repertoire. Admitted to the Contest are professional singers 18-35 years old who have special music education or students of music higher education institutions and colleges who send to the Organizing Committee a request for participation in the Contest, video materials and documents specified in clause 1.1. of the Statement.

At the end of initial review the Organizing Committee selects up to 15 performers inviting them to Moscow for taking part in the Contest.

Leading opera singers, pop music stars, conductors of music theatres, recognized maestros of pop art and mass culture of different countries as well as representatives of international production companies are invited to jury of the II Muslim Magomaev International Vocalists Contest.

The Contest will take place for two days and will be covered by Russian and international MSM and TV.

The Contest will be held on the Crocus City Hall stage accompanied by symphony orchestra. Only live singing and orchestral accompaniment are compulsory for all contest performances; any phonogram is excluded completely.

Contest performances are structured as a great show combined by common directing with specially prepared author scenography.

This Contest is a forum for musicians from different countries, schools and styles, experience and mastery exchange, discussion around vocal art further development.

Conditions for holding the Contest

1. Requesting procedure.

1.1. The contestant is to send to the Organizing Committee the following documents on 15 April 2012 the latest:

  • Request either in Russian or English on 15 April 2012 the latest (application form is attached);
  • DVD disc with records of two or three classic academic vocal compositions and two or three pop songs;
  • Passport copy;
  • Graduation certificate copy or proof of student status (for students);
  • Curriculum vitae (up to 2000 characters);
  • Photo (for e-version — resolution ≥ 300 dpi, size ≥ 2 MB);

1.2. Required documents and video materials specified in clause 1.3 are to be sent only by express mail delivery service (DHL, Fed Ex, EMS, etc.) to the Organizing Committee at the following address: 143400, Crocus City Mall (central reception), Crocus City Trade and Exhibition Center, bld.4, 65-66 km of Moscow MKAD Ring Road, Krasnogorsk, Moscow region, Russia.

1.3. Contestants will be selected by the Independent Contest Committee;

1.4. All admitted contestants will receive an Invitation specifying the date of arrival to the Contest from the Organizing Committee on 1 June 2012 the latest.

2. Procedure for holding the Contest.

2.1. Every admitted contestant is provided with two orchestra/ensemble rehearsals.

2.2. Contest performances consist of two rounds. All auditions are held openly with accompaniment of the orchestra/ensemble. All compositions are to be performed by heart in original language. Every composition may be performed in one round only.

2.3. Contestants perform pursuant to the order determined by Pot allocations prior to the first round. In the second round contestants perform in accordance with places taken during the first day (going from the last place to the first one).

2.4. The contest schedule:

  • 20 October 2012. I round. Consists of two parts. Participants are to perform a classic composition in the first part, and a pop hit in the second. Every participant’s entrance upon the stage is evaluated by international jury openly according to 10 score scale separately in the first and in the second parts. Based on results of the first part the participants are classified by places subject to total scores.
  • 21 October 2012. II round. Dedicated to the memory of Muslim Magomaev. Contestants perform according to taken places during the first day (from 15 to 1). They perform two compositions from Magomaev’s repertoire (first part — classic song and second part — pop song).

2.5. When voting all jury members of the Muslim Magomaev International Vocalists Contest have only one vote. Every juror evaluates the contestants openly by giving single score on a scale of one to ten after the performance. Chairman of the jury is entitled to grant one extra score to one contestant.

Scores of the first and second days are summarized and according to the results winners of the Contest are defined (places 1-3).

If several participants have equal amount of scores the jury defines the order of places by making joint consultative decision.

2.6. All admitted contestants take part in two rounds of the Contest though the jury reserves a right to exclude any contestant from further performances if needed.

2.7. The winners are to be awarded on gala show at the end of the second day.

2.8. All contestants are obliged with gratuitous participation in the final gala concert.

2.9. The Organizing Committee reserves all rights for broadcasting auditions of two days of the Contest on radio and television, digital recording and further distribution without extra fees to the contestants.

The Organizing Committee also reserves an exclusive right to make contracts with other parties regarding contestants’ participation in special projects behind the Contest.

3. Prizes and rewards.

3.1. The Organizing Committee of the Muslim Magomaev International Vocalists Contest states the following rewards:

  • 1st prize — Gold medal, 20 000 USD and title of Laureate
  • 2nd prize — Silver medal, 10 000 USD and title of Laureate
  • 3rd prize — Bronze medal, 5 000 USD and title of Laureate

3.2. Rewards are to be paid in rubles at the Central Bank of Russia rate on the date of payment with tax deduction according to the current law of the Russian Federation.

3.3. Depending on the results achieved by the contestants and within specified amount of rewards the jury is entitled to:

  • Not to give all the rewards;
  • Share the rewards among the performers

3.4. Decision made by the jury is final and is not subject to revision.

3.5. State and social organizations, creative unions, mass media, institutions and firms upon approval by the Organizing Committee and jury of the Contest may set up special prizes.

4. Programme of the Contest.

Round 1:

à) Aria from operas, cantatas or oratorio of western European or Russian composers up to the contestant’s choice;
b) Pop hit song up to the contestant’s choice (first performance is acceptable).

Round 2:

à) Any aria from the opera that Muslim Magomaev took part in (Eugene Onegin by P.I. Tchaikovsky; The Tsar’s Bride by N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov; Rigoletto, Aida, Otello by G.Verdi; Tosca by G. Puccini; The Barber of Seville by G. Rossini; Faust by C. Gounod; Pagliacci, Zaza by R. Leoncavallo; Carmen by G. Bizet; Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni by W.A. Mozart; Prince Igor by A. Borodin; Shah Ismael or Neapolitan Song by M. Magomaev);
b) Pop song including arias from western musicals and popular compositions of foreign authors from Muslim Magomaev’s repertoire (upon individual recommendation of the Organizing Committee).

Remarks:

à) Performance duration in each of two rounds is up to 10 minutes;
b) All compositions are to be performed by heart in the original language;
c) Every composition may be performed in one round only;
d) Opera, cantata, oratorio parts written for particular voice are to be performed in the original mode;
e) Upon request from the Organizing Committee admitted contestant is to provide required orchestral score and voices of the compositions performed.

5. Organization and financial terms of the Contest.

5.1. The Organizing Committee is liable for paying off residency costs of the contestants when staying in Moscow within period of their participation in the Contest (return economy class ticket, hotel, meals and transport).

5.2. Foreign admitted contestants are to issue visas at their own expenses applying to the Consular posts of the Russian Federation after receipt of the Invitation. Visas are to be issued for a period 15-25 October 2012.
